Prakriti – The Source of Everything

The Prakriti, a term originating from ancient Sanskrit, is a fundamental concept in several Indian philosophies, most notably Samkhya and Hinduism. It is here depicted as a dark blue, feminine figure adorned with golden ornaments to symbolize its creative, nurturing, and multifaceted nature. The term translates to “original or natural form,” “primary substance,” or “nature,” and it represents the primordial, uncaused source of all reality—both physical and mental.

Prakriti and the Three Gunas

A key aspect of Prakriti is that it’s not a singular, inert substance but is composed of three innate qualities, or gunas:

  • Sattva: Associated with goodness, purity, balance, and harmony. It’s the illuminating aspect that brings wisdom and clarity.
  • Rajas: Characterized by energy, passion, activity, and dynamism. It is the driving force behind creation and movement.
  • Tamas: Related to inertia, darkness, delusion, and destruction. It’s the grounding force that can lead to ignorance and resistance.

According to Samkhya philosophy, these three gunas exist in a state of perfect equilibrium in Prakriti. The entire manifest world, from the five basic elements (pancha bhutas) to all psychological and emotional experiences, arises when this equilibrium is disturbed.

Prakriti vs. Purusha

To truly understand Prakriti, it must be contrasted with its philosophical counterpart, Purusha.

  • Prakriti is the dynamic, creative, and ever-changing principle. It is the material and psychological realm, the “producer” of everything in existence.
  • Purusha is pure consciousness, the silent observer, and the unchanging metaphysical reality. It is the passive “witness” of Prakriti’s manifestations.

In this dualistic system, all empirical reality is a result of the interaction between the active Prakriti and the passive Purusha. The goal of liberation (moksha) is to realize that the self (Purusha) is distinct and separate from the material and mental world (Prakriti)

Other Philosophical Contexts

  • Yoga Sutras: Here, Prakriti is the entire cosmos, and its gunas are seen as the root of psychological suffering and ignorance. The practice of yoga aims to transcend the influence of the gunas and attain a state of pure consciousness.
  • Bhagavad Gita: Lord Krishna describes Prakriti as his lower, material energy, which comprises the mind, intellect, and the five elements. He contrasts this with his higher, spiritual energy (Purusha), the life force that animates the universe.
  • Jainism: The term is used in the context of karma, where “Prakriti” refers to a form of matter that obscures the soul’s perfections and prevents it from achieving liberation
